Monday. August 17, 2026. Sta. Clara de Montefalco was born in Montefalco, Italy. From an early age, she lived an eremitical life. Clare was a lively and intelligent young girl, but equally prayerful. The small community of hermits grew and was established as a formal convent of nuns under the Rule of Saint Augustine. At 23 years of age she was elected abbess, and became mother, teacher and spiritual director of the convent. A young woman of deep spiritual perception, though with almost no formal education, she was much sought after for advice and counsel from people of all walks of life, and from within the walls of the cloister became a director of many souls. She was deeply devoted to the Passion of Christ and was known to experience periods of ecstasy as she contemplated the mystery of the Cross. For many years she received no consolation in her interior life except that of her own fidelity to prayer and acts of penance. During her final illness she repeated to her sisters that she bore the cross of Christ in her heart. After her death, this was verified when the nuns examined her heart and found in it symbols of the passion of the Lord, formed from cardiac muscle. Clare died on August 17, 1308, at the age of 40. The life of St Clare of the Cross is a striking reminder that holiness is the work of grace and not of human effort. Cooperation with the work of God is indispensable for spiritual growth, “for He who made us without our willing it, will not save us without our willing it.” (Maridol: My Morning Prayer)

O God, you wished to exalt Saint Clare of the Cross by imprinting on her life and on her heart the signs of the Passion of our Lord, so that she could serve as a model of faith and of charity for her fellowmen. Dear St Clare, help me to recognise my ignorance and my failings and turn to God for instruction, forgiveness, and protection. Through your intercession, grant also to us a living devotion to the Cross of Jesus so that we, too, may become, by means of our faith and good works, humble co-workers of the Divine Redeemer in the salvation of the world. Amen. Sta. Clara de Montefalco, please pray for us.

WORD Today. Matthew 19:16-22. A young man approached Jesus and said, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” He answered him, “Why do you ask me about the good? There is only One who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” He asked him, “Which ones?” And Jesus replied, “You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother; and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All of these I have observed. What do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away, for he had many possessions. (Maridol: My Morning Prayer)
Reflection. The words of the Popes. Today’s Gospel begins with a great question posed to Jesus: “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Those words express a constant desire in life: our yearning for salvation, for an existence free from failure, evil and death. This hope of the human heart is described as something to be “inherited”, not something to be gained by force, begged for, or negotiated. Eternal life, which God alone can give, is bestowed on us as an inheritance, as parents do with their children. That is why Jesus tells us that, to receive God’s gift, we must do his will. It is written in the Law: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,” and “your neighbour as yourself.” When we do these two things, we respond to the Father’s love. God’s will is the law of life that the Father himself was the first to follow, by loving us unconditionally in his Son, Jesus. To live eternally, we do not need to cheat death, but to serve life by caring for others in this, our time together. That is the supreme law that is before all society’s rules and gives them their meaning. (Pope Leo XIV, Angelus, 13 July 2025)
