Monday. August 24, 2026. John 1:45-51. Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. In St. John’s Gospel, Bartholomew is known by the name Nathaniel. He hailed from Cana in Galilee and was one of the first disciples called by the Lord. On that initial meeting, Jesus uttered the glorious compliment: “Behold, an Israelite indeed in whom there is no guile!” After the Resurrection, he was favored by becoming one of the few apostles who witnessed the appearance of the risen Savior on the Sea of Galilee. After having received the gifts of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost, Bartholomew evangelized Asia Minor, northwestern India, and Greater Armenia and was martyred there. While still alive, his skin was torn from his body. The Armenians honor him as the apostle of their nation. Saint Bartholomew is an example of the pure man who sees – recognizes – God and, on seeing Him, believes in Him, and upon believing in Him, follows Him. (Maridol: My Morning Prayer)

O Glorious St. Bartholomew, Jesus called you a person without guile, and you saw in this word a sign that he was the Son of God and King of Israel. Obtain for us the grace to be ever guileless and innocent as doves. At the same time, help us to have your gift of faith to see the Divine hand in the events of daily life. May we discern the signs of the times that lead to Jesus on earth and will eventually unite us to him forever in heaven. Pray for us that we may one day glorify the Blessed Trinity in heaven. Obtain for us your lively faith that we may consider all people, things, and events in the light of God. Also pray that we may be generous in making sacrifices of worldly things as you so wisely did. Please also pray for me and my intentions (State your intentions here). Seek this, our favor: grace for our children to support the MONTINOLA-CUMAGUN CARE FOUNDATION’S FOUR LEGS of PURPOSE: (1.) Special Children SPED; a child’s mind is the most precious thing to waste. (The motto of the American Negro College), and the Handicapped Senior Citizens – Physical Therapy. (2.) Financial Support for Diocesan priests and Grade School Teachers for the rural areas. (3.) Computer Start-up Education Tools for selected public schools. “… expose and acclimate the youth to Information Technology—the age of computers. The children of Negros Occidental must be computer literate to better their lives for the future and help our country progress to a global economy. Estonia and Finland, two countries smaller than ours, have put into their laws that Access to the Internet is a right of all citizens, similar to access to water and electricity.” [Negros Economic Development Foundation 40th Charter Foundation Day, Antonio G. Cumagun, Guest Speaker, Bacolod City, July 24, 2010] and (4.) Selected Start-up Management and Financial Support for Small Businesses as multipliers. ” … From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Luke 12:48. The sin of the rich man was not that he did wrong things, but that he did nothing. (A.G.C. Autobiography Song of Myself Memoirs, Looking Back at Serendipity, 2002).

WORD Today. John 1:45-51. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel. There is no duplicity in him.” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Reflection: The words of the Popes. Nathanael is placed in the scene of his calling, recounted in John’s Gospel, next to Philip, in other words, the place that Bartholomew occupies in the lists of the Apostles mentioned in the other Gospels. Philip told Nathanael that he had found “him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph” (Jn 1: 45). As we know, Nathanael’s retort was rather strongly prejudiced: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” In its own way, this form of protestation is important for us. Indeed, it makes us see that according to Judaic expectations the Messiah could not come from such an obscure village as, precisely. But at the same time Nathanael’s protest highlights God’s freedom, which baffles our expectations by causing him to be found in the very place where we least expect him. Nathanael’s reaction suggests another thought to us: in our relationship with Jesus we must not be satisfied with words alone. In his answer, Philip offers Nathanael a meaningful invitation: “Come and see!” (Jn 1: 46). Our knowledge of Jesus needs above all a first-hand experience: someone else’s testimony is of course important. However, we ourselves must then be personally involved in a close and deep relationship with Jesus. (Pope Benedict XVI, General Audience, 4 October 2006)

Lord God, my Father, thank You for knowing us completely and loving us just as we are; help us to recognize You, even when we do not fully understand. Like Nathanael, may we come to You with open hearts, willing to know You more deeply. Strengthen our faith, Lord, so that we may confidently say, “You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” Lord Jesus, help us to believe in You and so we shall see what You have prepared for us. Amen
