Wednesday September 9, 2026. Saint Peter Claver was born to a prosperous family in Verdu, Spain. He entered the Jesuits in 1601. When he was in Majorca studying philosophy, Claver was encouraged to go to the missions in America. In 1610, he landed in Cartagena, Colombia. After completing his studies, he was ordained in 1616. Cartagena was one of two ports where slaves from Africa arrived to be sold in South America. Peter worked daily to minister to the needs of the 10,000 slaves who arrived each year. When a ship arrived, Peter first begged for fruits, biscuits, or sweets to bring to the slaves. He then went on board with translators to bring his gifts as well as his skills as a doctor and teacher. Claver entered the holds of the ships and would not leave until every person received a measure of care, for, as he said: “We must speak to them with our hands, before we try to speak to them with our lips”. Peter gave short instructions in the Catholic faith and baptized as many as he could. In this way he could prevail on the slave owners to give humane treatment to fellow Christians. Peter Claver baptized more than 300,000 slaves by 1651. Fr. Claver’s apostolate extended beyond his care for slaves. He became a moral force. He preached in the city square, gave missions to sailors and traders as well as country missions. He was sickened by the plague. In the last years of his life, Peter was too ill to leave his room. The ex-slave who was hired to care for him treated him cruelly, not feeding him for many days, and never bathing him. Claver never complained. He was convinced that he deserved this treatment. It is said that he lost his senses of taste and smell due to his long years of breathing obnoxious odors. When he was anointed with the oil of the Sacrament of the Sick in 1654, Cartagenians crowded into his room to see him for the last time, treating it as a shrine. Saint Peter’s determination to serve forever the most abused, rejected, and lowly of all people is stunningly heroic. The apostle of the slaves, he lived so they could experience God’s love. Lord, for love of you, St. Peter Claver, through his prayer, help us to see the dignity of the family for those who have more in life; help those who have less in life help themselves – “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” (Proverb)
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your never-ending gifts to us. We thank You for the gifts that come to us from You through our families, friends, and neighbors. Help Ester to ensure the equitable sharing of our children’s inheritance from her total marital share, and for me to donate my total marital rights to the Montinola Cumagun Care Foundation, to help those who have less in life to help themselves, and we pray for the intercession through St. Claver for our Lord’s blessings to grace our children and their children’s children, to wholeheartedly support Article II of the Articles of Incorporation of the Montinola Cumagun Care Foundation, organized exclusively for charitable, educational, health, and social welfare purposes, without intent of profit.
PRIMARY PURPOSES
1. Education (Teachers). To promote and enhance education by providing scholarships, grants, training, professional development, instructional materials, welfare assistance, and other forms of support to teachers and educators, particularly those serving underserved or disadvantaged communities.
2. Health and Welfare ( Elderly). To promote the health, dignity, and well- being of elderly persons, through medical assistance, preventive health programs, wellness initiatives, access to healthcare services, and humanitarian aid.
3. Person with Special Needs. To assist, support, and advocate for children and adults with special needs, including those with physical, intellectual, developmental, sensory, or learning disabilities, through educational assistance, therapy support, inclusive programs, caregiver training, and access to specialized services.
SECONDARY PURPOSES
1. To establish, operate, or support programs, projects, facilities, and partnerships aligned with the foregoing purposes.
2. To solicit, accept, and manage donations, grants, legacies, endowments, and contributions, whether local or foreign, cash or in kind.
3. To collaborate with government agencies, local government units, schools, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations. 4. To conduct seminars, research, and community outreach consistent with the Foundation’s objectives.

WORD Today. Luke 6:20-26. Raising his eyes toward his disciples, Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.”
Reflection. The words of the Popes. On the mountain, Christ gives his disciples the new law, no longer written on stone. It is a law that renews our lives and makes them good, even when the world seems to have failed us and is full of misery. Only God can truly call the poor and afflicted blessed (cf. vv. 3-4), because he is the highest good who gives himself to all with infinite love. Only God can satisfy those who seek peace and justice (cf. vv. 6.9), because he is the just judge of the world and the author of eternal peace. Only in God do the meek, the merciful and the pure of heart find joy (vv. 5.7-8), because he is the fulfilment of their expectations. In persecution, God is the source of redemption; in falsehood, he is the anchor of truth. Therefore, Jesus proclaims: “Rejoice and be glad!” (…) In this way, Jesus illuminates the meaning of history. It is no longer written by conquerors, but rather by God, who can accomplish it by saving the oppressed. (…) The Beatitudes become for us a measure of happiness, leading us to ask whether we consider it an achievement to be bought or a gift to be shared; whether we place it in objects that are consumed or in relationships that accompany us. It is in fact because of Christ (cf. Mt 5:11) and thanks to him that the bitterness of trials is transformed into the joy of the redeemed. Jesus does not speak of a distant consolation, but of a constant grace that always sustains us, especially in times of affliction. (Pope Leo XIV, Angelus, 1st February 2026)
Eternal Father in Heaven, teach me to see the blessings that come from having You in my life. When I am in need, remind me that You are my true treasure. When I am hurting, give me the faith to trust that You are always with me. Keep my heart humble, grateful, and focused on what truly matters. Lord, protect me from becoming too attached to worldly success. May I seek to please only You. May I find my happiness in knowing and loving You. Jesus, be my greatest blessing and my greatest treasure, I ask. Amen
