Wednesday. October 7, 2026

Wednesday. October 7, 2026. The story of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary in the 16th century: Pope Pius V was having trouble with the Ottoman Turks, who were a real danger to Christianity. After months of disagreements and bickering, he was able to unite Spain, Venice, and the States of the Church in a naval expedition to fight the Turks. The two navies met in the Gulf of Lepanto in Greece on October 7, 1571. On the same day, the Rosary Confraternity of Rome was meeting at the Dominican headquarters there. The group recited the Rosary for the special intention of the Christians at battle. The Christians defeated the Turks in a spectacular victory and believed it was the intercessory power of the Blessed Virgin that won the victory. Pope Pius V dedicated a thanksgiving to Our Lady of Victory. Pope Gregory XIII later changed the name to the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Out of this celebration arose the custom of dedicating the entire month of October to Mary and the Rosary. The purpose of the rosary is to help us meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pius XII called it a compendium of the gospel. The main focus is on Jesus—his birth, life, death, and resurrection. The weapons of war have changed drastically since the battle of Lepanto well over 400 years ago; but without doubt the spiritual weapon of the rosary remains as potent for winning the final victory, if only enough people will properly make use of it. At Lourdes and at Fatima Mary appeared to the favored children holding in her hands a rosary. She made it clear to them, and through them to the world, that the frequent and devout recitation of the rosary was the means by which the world could be brought back to God and lasting peace could be achieved. The rosary is simple. The constant repetition of words helps create an atmosphere in which to contemplate the mysteries of God. We sense that Jesus and Mary are with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We grow in hope that God will bring us to share in the glory of Jesus and Mary forever. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us. The prayer attributed to Saint Bernard of Clairvaux addressed to Mother Mary is known as the Memorare. The text (“Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, . .”) is the shortened form of a longer prayer (Ad sanctitatis tuae pedes, dulcissima Virgo Maria) that comes from the 15th century. St. Francis de Sales (1567−1622) writes that he prayed it as a student in Paris.

WORD Today. Luke 11:1-4. Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.”He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.”

Reflection: The words of the Popes. “Do not be afraid.” This is the essential element of a vocation: for man is afraid. (…) Do not be afraid, for you have found Grace; do not be afraid of life, do not be afraid of your motherhood, do not be afraid of your marriage, do not be afraid of your priesthood, for you have found Grace. This certainty, this awareness, helps us just as it helped Mary. (…) And so, all people are born through your “yes”. You must know this: such a “yes”, in imitation of Mary, such a “yes” creates joy, a new life, a breath, a blessing. (…) And so, by analogy, in due proportion, your ‘yes’, your fidelity – whether as husband, wife, young person, doctor or professor – your own distinct “yes” creates joy; the world is reborn; and human life – in its various dimensions, in the social sphere, in different settings such as the family, the parish and the nation – becomes more human, thanks to this “yes”. (Saint John Paul II, Address to the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, 25 March 1982)

Lord Jesus, teach me to pray. Teach me to come to You with a humble and trusting heart—not only when I need something, but simply because I desire to be close to You.

Teach me to say, “Our Father,” and to truly believe that I am Your beloved child.
When my prayers are weak, teach me to persevere.
When I am confused, teach me to listen.
When I am afraid, teach me to trust.
And when I am blessed, teach me to be grateful.

Lord, may my prayer not only change my circumstances, but change me—to become more loving, more forgiving, more patient, and more faithful to Your will. Teach me to pray, Jesus, and teach me to live my prayer

My Living and Holographic Will

Oh Lord Jesus Christ, to Your most Sacred Heart I confide this intention – for our children, and their children’s children, to wholeheartedly support the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws of the MONTINOLA CUMAGUN CARE FOUNDATION, organized exclusively for charitable, educational, health, and social welfare purposes, without intent of profit.

To fully appreciate the beauty of a diamond, it must be viewed from many angles. Many angles too are needed to fully love the most precious jewel of all, Jesus Christ. The Gospels are four such angles showing the life of Jesus from different viewpoints. Another great view is through the eyes of the only person who followed and loved Jesus from the Annunciation (today’s Gospel) to the Ascension (1st Reading). That person is His Mother.

Mary. Mama Mary walks us through the entire Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious angles of the life of our Savior when we pray with her in the Rosary.

Today is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. For many sinners, she and her Rosary have been the lifeline that pulled them back to Jesus. (Repost Maruja Paredes)
