(William Barclay, in Antonio G. Cumagun Autobiography Song of Myself Memoirs, Looking Back at Serendipity, 2002) Only look upon me, then do what Your love inspires. Let Your Sacred Heart decide. I count on You. I trust in You. I throw myself on Your mercy. Lord Jesus, You will not fail me. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in Your love for me. Sacred Heart of Jesus, Your kingdom come. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I have asked You for many favors, but I earnestly implore this one. Take it, place it in Your open Heart. When the Eternal Father looks upon it, He will see it covered with Your Precious Blood. It will be no longer my prayer, but Yours, Jesus. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You. Amen.

Friday. August 21, 2026. Saint Pope Saint Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, “Bepi,”  in Riese, Italy, a farming village. At 11, he walked five miles to school and back. At 15, he began attending the local seminary. When his father died, Giuseppe wanted to come home and help with the family. His mother, however, would not let him. In 1858, he was ordained and then worked as a parish priest for 17 years. He believed his call was to encourage those who were poor to lead Christian lives and to help them overcome financial problems. He was, however, named spiritual director of the major seminary and chancellor of the diocese. Later, he became a bishop and then a cardinal. In 1903, he was elected to become Pope Pius X. He took as his motto “Restore all things in Christ.” He emphasized the importance of the Eucharist. He directed that children as young as 7 should be allowed to receive the Eucharist. He initiated changes in Church music and worship. He began a biblical institute. He gave the first official impetus to the modern liturgical renewal. Pope Pius X believed that real peace could be achieved only through social justice and charity. He sponsored and sheltered refugees with his own resources. He wrote an encyclical encouraging Latin American bishops to improve the treatment of native people working on plantations. He worked to stop the world from going to war. When Europe entered World War I, Pius was heartbroken. Just a few weeks after the war started, Pope Pius X died. “I was born poor, I lived poor, I will die poor.” In the last year of his life, he granted many private audiences with the poor and sick. Rumors of miraculous cures began to spread throughout Rome after people visited him. Saint Pope Pius X’s holiness shone forth conspicuously; from him we learn again that “the folly of the Cross,” simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness. Oh, Pope Saint Pius X of the Eucharist, pray for me to Jesus Christ that I may get His Love. Also pray for me that I get the vigour and will to live a life full of concern for the viability of the Montinola Cumagun Care Foundation, as a measure of adoration for Blessed Mother Mary.

WORD Today. Matthew 22:34-40.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Reflection. The Words of the Popes. Jesus’ filial union with the Father is expressed in the perfect love which He also made the primary commandment of the Gospel: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first of the commandments’ (Mt 22:37ff). As is well known, Jesus adds a second commandment to this one, ‘like the first’, that of love for one’s neighbour (cf. Mt 22:39). And He offers himself as an example of this love: “I give you a new commandment: that you love one another, just as I have loved you” (Jn 13:34). He teaches and entrusts to His followers a love modelled on His own. To this love the virtues of charity listed by Saint Paul can truly be applied: “Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful, it is not arrogant  … Love does not insist on its own way … It does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things … endures all things” (1 Cor 13:4–7). When, in his letter, the Apostle presented this image of evangelical charity to his readers in Corinth, his mind and heart were undoubtedly filled with the thought of Christ’s love, towards which he wished to direct the lives of the Christian communities; thus, his hymn to charity may be regarded as a commentary on the commandment to love one another following the example of Christ, who is love (as Saint Catherine of Siena would say many centuries later): “(As) I have loved you” (Jn 13:34). (Saint John Paul II, General Audience, 31 August 1988)

Almighty Father, free us from envy and entitlement. You know what is best for each of us. Teach us not to compare ourselves with others but to trust in Your perfect wisdom and goodness. Amen
