Tuesday. September 8, 2026. The source for the story of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the documented version found in the Protoevangelium of James in the early second century; it describes Mary’s father Joachim as a wealthy member of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joachim was deeply grieved, along with his wife Anne, by their childlessness. Joachim and Anne began to devote themselves rigorously to prayer and fasting, wondering whether their inability to conceive a child signified God’s displeasure. As it turned out, the couple were to be blessed abundantly as an angel revealed to Anne that all generations would honor their future child: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive, and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in the world.” After Mary’s birth, Anne “made a sanctuary” in the infant girl’s room, and “allowed nothing common or unclean” on account of the holiness of the child. The writing records that when she was one year old, her father “made a great feast, and invited the priests, and the scribes, and the elders, and all the people of Israel.” “And Joachim brought the child to the priests,” and they blessed her, saying: ‘O God of our fathers, bless this child, and give her an everlasting name to be named in all generations’… And he brought her to the chief priests, and they blessed her, saying: ‘O God most high, look upon this child, and bless her with the utmost blessing, which shall be for ever.’” Joachim and Ann were filled with gratitude for the gift of a child. They raised Mary as a child of God, teaching her to love and serve. When the angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Jesus, she already had great faith. Her strong faith allowed her to say yes to God’s plan. St. Augustine described the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary as an event of historic significance, and an appropriate prelude to the birth of Jesus Christ. On Our Lady’s birthday, the Church celebrates the first dawning of redemption in the world of the Savior’s mother, Mary. The Blessed Virgin occupies a unique place in the history of salvation. We rejoice that the Mother of God is our Mother, too. Let us call upon the Blessed Virgin as “Cause of our joy”, one of the most beautiful titles. (Maridol: My Morning Prayer)

WORD Today. Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23.
The Book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the king.
David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.
After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus, called the Christ.
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.”
Reflection. The words of the Popes. The Gospel of Matthew presents to us the “genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham” (Mt 1: 1), underlining and further explaining God’s fidelity to the promise that he puts into practice not only through human beings but with them, and, as for Jacob, sometimes in tortuous and unexpected ways. The awaited Messiah, the subject of the promise, is true God but also true man; the Son of God, but also the Son born of the Virgin Mary of Nazareth, the holy flesh of Abraham in whose descendants all the peoples of the earth would be blessed (cf. Gn 22: 18). In this genealogy, in addition to Mary, four other women are recalled. They are not Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, or Rachel, that is, the great figures of the history of Israel. Instead, paradoxically, they are four pagan women: Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Tamar, who seemingly “cloud” the purity of a genealogy. Yet, in these pagan women who appear at crucial points in the history of salvation, also appears the mystery of the church of the pagans, the universality of salvation. (…) They are also sinful women, and thus the mystery of grace appears in them: it is not our works that redeem the world, but rather the Lord who gives us true life. (Pope Benedict XVI, Homily, 17 December 2009)

God’s saving work often begins in places and circumstances that seem small, hidden, or difficult to understand. Bethlehem is little among the towns of Judah, yet from it comes the ruler whose greatness reaches the ends of the earth. The genealogy of Jesus passes through generations marked by unexpected people, wounded histories, and upheaval, but God patiently leads this human story toward Christ.
Joseph stands within that mystery. He does not understand Mary’s pregnancy, yet he is called to trust God’s word and receive Mary into his life. In Jesus, God does not remain distant from the struggles of his people: Emmanuel means “God with us,” and Jesus comes to save us from our sins. The Lord can work through what appears confusing or inadequate, shaping those who love him into the image of his Son. Like Joseph, we may not see the whole purpose at once. Faith means taking the next obedient step, trusting that God’s mercy is already at work and that his presence can bring hope even through an unfinished story. (Google: Catholic Gallery)
Dearest loving Mother, we who so frequently fly to you for our own intentions, may we stop today and just thank and acclaim you for your most perfect obedience that gave us our Lord! Precious Mother Mary “May your day be filled with your prayers being answered for more sinners to be saved and more hearts be converted to know your Son, and peace in this world, may we all do penance to save sinners, the poor, the afflicted and for ourselves to grow closer to you, as you bring us to Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Maridol: My Morning Prayer)
