Guardian Angel Novena – Day 5. Loving God, you are so good that you gave me a Guardian Angel to protect my body and my soul. Help me to know and follow my angel so that, with their guidance, I will be worthy of being in Heaven with You! My sweet Guardian Angel, you are a witness to all of my actions every day of my life. Purify me to be holy and good like you. Refine and cleanse me of my sinful habits and keep me from temptation so that I may be the person God is calling me to be. You are with me all the time, so you already know these are my intentions that I ask you to deliver to the Lord.

Sunday. September 27, 2026. Saint Vincent de Paul was born into a peasant family in 1581, in Pouy, southwestern France. He was a highly intelligent youth but had no time for diversion; he had to work in the fields during early childhood. He was sent to the Franciscan School de Dax, was happy with his studies, and desired to leave his farm life. He felt ashamed of his origins and of his own father. Vincent de Paul said: “As a young man, when my father took me to the city, I was ashamed of going with him and of recognizing him as my father because he went poorly dressed and limped. I recall on one occasion in the school where I studied I was told my father came to see me, a poor farmer. I refused to go out and see him.” He studied theology at the University, was ordained a priest at 19, and completed his theological studies 4 years later. Using his status as a priest to escape the dull village life of southern France, Vincent went to Paris in 1608. He gave some courses and lessons to the rich children; he could have been happy. . . but he was not. He came into contact again with farmers and the poor people; he realized that this is what interested him the most. In 1617, events transformed his life and gave him peace of soul; from the pulpit, Vincent proposed to all the faithful the idea to go to priests and make a general confession of their lives. He encountered face to face an agonizing person who experienced extreme moral loneliness. This man who was about to die still had not found and believed in the gentleness of God. Here is where the heart of his vocation was found: gentleness. His heart was touched. He desired to go to the farthest places and tell all those who find themselves lost that God exists, that He is a God of gentleness who has not forgotten them. The proof is that this priest went to them and heard them with gentleness that caused them to think of the gentleness of God. They called him back to Paris and had found his path, the way of compassion and gentleness for those suffering abandonment. He utilized his position as a base for operations and established his small charity associations. He started the first religious group of women dedicated entirely to works of charity outside the cloister, called the Daughters of Charity. The religious spirit he communicated was simple, practical, and straightforward. He looked to Christ as his leader and tried to translate the Gospel message into concrete results. He continued his activities without rest, always giving of himself; for 43 years he did not stop sacrificing himself for the poor. He wrote long meditations on humility, a virtue which he introduced as the first quality of a priest of the Mission. In July 1660 he became gravely ill. He recuperated but was unable to walk. He stayed in Saint Lazare amongst the poor. He gave his final blessing to the priests of the Mission, the Daughters of Charity, the abandoned children, and all the poor; he died on September 27. Saint Vincent had the temptation of leading a life very different than this life of work; he turned his back on this style of life for two reasons: his fidelity to his origins and the love of Christ reflected in the poor moved him to opt for the Gospel. The religious groups he founded continue to carry on his work.
Noble Saint Vincent de Paul, beloved servant of the poor, may we follow your example and do good works among those whom society has abandoned, enslaved, or forgotten. Inspire us to feed the hungry, to love a child, to provide comfort and medicine to the sick, to clothe those whose garments are threadbare, and to offer hope and our Lord’s words to all who need respite. Pray for us to our beloved God that we may commit ourselves selflessly to doing the same charitable acts that you did all your life, and intercede with him that we may have the favor of his guidance and strength and love upon this important and meaningful work.
WORD Today. Matthew 21:28-32. Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: “What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir, ‘but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?” They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.”
Reflection. The words of the Popes. If your heart is not repentant, if you do not listen to the Lord, if you do not accept correction and do not trust in Him, you have an unrepentant heart. But these hypocrites who take offence at what Jesus says about tax collectors and prostitutes, yet then secretly went to them, either to indulge their passions or to do business – but all in secret – they were ‘pure’! And the Lord does not want them. (…) These people cannot receive Salvation. They are closed off to Salvation. “I will leave in the midst of you a people humble and lowly; they shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord”, for their whole lives. And this remains true to this day, does it not? When we see God’s holy people who are humble, who find their riches in faith in the Lord, in trust in the Lord – the humble, lowly people who trust in the Lord: these are the saved, and this is the way of the Church, is it not? She must take this path, not the other path that does not listen to the voice, that does not accept correction and does not trust in the Lord. (…). When we can say to the Lord: “Lord, these are my sins – they are not his, or hers, they are mine… They are mine. Take them upon yourself, and so I shall be saved” – when we can do this, we shall be the beautiful people, the “humble and poor people”, who trust in the name of the Lord. May the Lord grant us this grace. (Pope Francis, Homily of 16 December 2014) Luke 8:19-21. The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him. But they were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside. And they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers. are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”
God our Father, give me the ears to hear You calling, and please be patient with me if it takes me time to answer Your call. Give me the wisdom to know Your will, that You want only what’s best for me – for me to be closer to You. Bless me with a willing heart to seek You, that even when I say “No”, I realize the true desire of my heart is to be united with You. Help me develop and resolve the strength to say “Yes” and work in Your vineyard. Today, I pray that I will approach every situation with my desire to serve You at the forefront of my thoughts and a joyful disposition in my heart, ready to follow in true obedience. Jesus, my Savior, I ask this in Your name. Amen.
